Hungary work permit for Indians

Hungary is effectively closed to Indian candidates for low- and medium-skilled jobs: no country is currently designated for the guest-worker permit, and the permit for non-graduate work is listed only for Georgia, Armenia and the Philippines. Graduates can use the EU Blue Card, the Hungarian Card for listed fields, or work on approved priority investments.

What is happening now in Hungary

Hungary is effectively closed to Indian candidates for low- and medium-skilled jobs: the immigration authority (OIF) states that no third country is currently designated for the guest-worker permit, and the employment-purpose permit for workers without a degree is listed only for Georgia, Armenia and the Philippines. Realistic routes for Indians are the EU Blue Card, the Hungarian Card (listed graduate fields) and work on government-approved priority investments.

The Hungary process step by step, and how to check your status

Can you apply for Hungary from Canada, the US, the UK, Australia, Ireland or New Zealand?

OIF: applicants who need a visa apply 'at the Hungarian consulate for their country of nationality or habitual residence', so an Indian legally living in these countries can apply there — but only for routes open to Indians (Blue Card, Hungarian Card, priority investment). From abroad: the Hungarian consulate for your nationality or habitual residence. In Hungary: only if you entered visa-free and hold no permit, via Enter Hungary or a regional directorate. Extensions only in Hungary via Enter Hungary.

Which jobs are in demand in Hungary?

These occupations appear on official shortage lists, quotas or forecasts; each links its source. A list is not a job offer: every route still needs an employer who hires you.

Do you need IELTS or the local language?

No Hungarian or English test (such as IELTS) appears in the OIF work-permit pages checked; employers may set their own. Since 1 Jan 2025, applicants for a national or EU residence card must pass a written Hungarian cultural knowledge exam, held in Hungarian in Budapest (HUF 20,000 per sitting).

What we can and cannot do for a Hungary work permit

What we do

  • Check your profile against the Hungary rules on this page, and tell you plainly if a route is not open to you.
  • Put your profile forward when an employer we work with in Hungary is hiring for your occupation. We publish a vacancy only when we hold the employer’s demand letter and power of attorney. Open vacancies
  • Help you prepare a complete, honest application file.

What no one can do, including us

  • Guarantee a job, a permit or a visa. The Hungary authorities decide.
  • For work without a degree, the permits open to some other nationalities are not open to Indian nationals today; only government-approved priority investment projects remain. No agent can change that. oif.gov.huchecked 24 Oct 2026

What we have not confirmed yet

We would rather show a gap than guess. These points are still open; a consultant checks them for your case.

  • Annual guest-worker quota for 2026 (no figure on OIF pages) — moot while no countries are designated.
  • Effective date of Government Decree 450/2024 and of the employer sanctions.
  • Fees for the Hungarian Card and for Blue Card applications filed abroad.
  • Family-reunification rules for Blue Card and Hungarian Card holders.
  • Whether the Hungarian Card counts towards the national residence card.
  • Labour market test rules for the Blue Card and Hungarian Card.
  • Which Hungarian missions in India (New Delhi, Mumbai) and in CA/US/UK/AU/IE/NZ accept residence applications, and any VFS role.
  • The EU Immigration Portal (Aug 2025) still describes a general single permit with a labour market test; OIF's 2026 pages show nationality-restricted routes. OIF is treated as authoritative here.
  • Hungary-specific vacancy statistics for 2026 (only the ELA 2025 list was used).
