There is no Schengen work visa

A Schengen visa is a short-stay visa, and it does not let you work. To work in a Schengen country you need that country’s own work permit and a long-stay national (D) visa or residence permit, applied for with an employer.

Why a Schengen visa cannot be used for work

  • The Embassy of Lithuania in India warns that Schengen visas “are not suitable for employment”.
  • The Ministry of External Affairs warns that a tourist visa is not a work visa, and that illegal agents use it to send people abroad.
  • Anyone who suggests travelling on a visit visa and “converting” it later is asking you to break the law of the destination country.

No. A Schengen short-stay visa does not allow work. You need the destination country’s work permit and a long-stay national visa or residence permit.

Can a visit visa be converted into a work permit in Europe?

Do not plan on it. The routes on this site are applied for before you travel, with an employer, and the embassies warn against offers built on visit visas.

Does a work permit in one country let me work anywhere in Schengen?

No. A national work permit is issued by one country for work in that country. In Croatia, for example, the permit names one employer, and working for another employer needs a new application.
